Assos
A picturesque village on a small peninsula, overlooked by a 16th century Venetian fortress. A steep but paved path reaches the castle in about 40 minutes, but the astonishing view deserves the trek.
Melissani lake
Just outside Sami, the cave of Melissani includes a lake, with trees and forests surrounding it. The visit is possible onboard a small rowing boat.
Drogarati cave
A 60-meter-deep cave with impressive formations of stalactites and stalagmites. It has a constant temperature of 18°C and 90% humidity. Occasionally concerts are performed in the “Sala of Apotheosis”, the main hall of the cave.
Saint George castle
The castle was built 800 years ago by Venetians, on a hill 320 metres high, not far from Argostoli. The Castle used to be the capital of Kefalonia for centuries.
Mount Ainos
The highest mountain on the island (it is pronounced “Enos”), is 1628 m in altitude. It is a national park, rich in trees, particularly the Abies cephalonica, a species unique to the island. The mountaintop, which can be reached by a large road, offers a stunning view of the southern half of the island and the sea separating Kefalonia from Zakinthos.
Argostoli
The main town on the island, with about 25000 inhabitants. Famous for its stone bridge, 690 meters long, which crosses the lagoon, originally designed by the architect Charles De Bosset in 1813, during the English protectorate. The lagoon is full of birds, duck, swans, grebes… Tourists like to feed the birds; it is very important for their safety to offer them only vegetables.
Turtles in Argostoli
In the Koutavos lagoon, in the center of Argostoli, where the fishing boats dock, every day you can see turtles (Caretta Caretta), fed by fishermen cleaning their nets. It’s not unusual to meet a turtle even while swimming or traversing open waters.
